Know the Signs of Anxiety in Dogs
Help Your Dog Manage this Common Condition
Dr. Mary Ann Gottschlich of Grady Veterinary Hospital wants to help raise awareness about anxiety in dogs. She shares,
“One of the most common things I see in my canine patients is stress and anxiety. And dogs can exhibit this in many different ways and from many different scenarios, even simply day-to-day life.”
Let’s explore the causes and symptoms of anxiety in dogs– and what you can do to help them feel calmer.
Causes of Anxiety in Dogs
What people find stressful may be different from what dogs feel. These situations can often be a source of stress for dogs:
- Going to the vet
- Riding in the car
- Storms
- Fireworks
- Meeting strangers
- Having non-family members in the house
- Being separated from you
- Aging
Each dog is different, so it’s important to identify the source of anxiety. For instance, some dogs love car rides, but some find them stressful.

What to Do if You Suspect Your Dog Suffers from Anxiety
If your dog shows any symptoms of anxiety, talk to your veterinarian. You and your vet know your dog best. You can work together on a treatment plan, which may include:
- Training with a professional to acclimate your dog to situations, teach behavior and train you how to help your dog remain calm
- Prevention strategies for changing your dog’s environment, where appropriate
- Anti-anxiety medication options
